I started my work machine to finish some tasks and noticed many programs lacked their icons. My documents folder seemed completely empty, and Proton Drive wasn’t syncing my Desktop or Documents folders. I also removed OneDrive for that reason. It’s unclear what led to these issues or where the missing files are.
It seems a Windows update occurred today... possibly it was the reason. Appreciate the effort. I’ll attempt it now.
Someone else faced the same issue before, while Windows was being upgraded through the update. All their files disappeared too. Check your update history to find out which version was installed last. Remember how much space it occupied before the files vanished? This might show if they’re still present, probably in the temporary profile folder created during the update. After a clean installation, use data recovery tools to try and restore your lost files.
Honestly I'm not too fussed, it is a recent install of windows anyway, and I have all my work documents to Proton Drive. So I haven't lost any 'work', just application data it seems, just annoying really. The icon's fix themselves after the program is reinstalled which I expected. But I'm curious what caused it... wouldn't want it happening again or on my main PC.
