I have a Rysen 5 5600X paired with a tuf gaming B550-plus. Both devices are around 4-5 months old. I'm running Windows 11 (x64) with 16GB RAM (2400MHz). Recently, I've observed the system overheating significantly, often reaching temperatures above 80°C, which causes it to shut down. I've tried cleaning the fans, applying new thermal paste, updating BIOS and drivers, adjusting CPU frequency, enabling eco mode, and even considering a clean install or additional fan cleaning. However, I'm still unsure what to do next and need advice. (P.S. My location is in a different time zone—Paris and Madrid—and school won't help with this.)

What cooler are you using? If it's a watercooler, the pump appears to be off. For an aircooler, checking if the fans are spinning provides more details. Are you asking if the system shuts down automatically due to overheating, or should you manually turn it off because the temperature is too high? What actual temperature does it reach? The target is around 105°C or close to that.

For quicker results, skip the full setup. Let me know your cooler type—water cooling with a pump or air cooling using a heatsink and fan.

Luckily someone mentioned the watercooler, which my dad helped me switch to an Enermax LIqmax iii (120 mm). At first, the fans ran really fast for no clear reason, then they slowed down. After that, the issue stopped again, about two days ago. It seemed to shut off automatically because of overheating—just like Origami Cactus said. I’d turn it off too, since my old coolers and CPUs never acted like that.

I mentioned that the pump is completely nonfunctional. Change to another cooler and all your issues should disappear, but keep using your PC in this manner until the cooler is replaced.

5600x suggests going for a Scythe Mugen 5. One unit works well on a 5900X. Keep in mind you'll need to swap the backplate and cooler brackets, possibly taking out the motherboard depending on the case. Updated March 21, 2022 by An0maly_76

It's a solid idea, but sometimes reinstalling isn't enough to solve everything.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll reach out to my dad about the suggestion and check if it helps. Fingers crossed it works out. (Life is awesome) The toughest part was thinking the thermal paste was the issue—I changed it four times. I’m really clueless.

Some issues aren't immediately clear. Stay patient with yourself. I was setting up a new system and had already installed the motherboard and CPU when I remembered something about cooler brackets being different for the Mugen model. I took the board out, possibly without removing it, because the case had extra space that let me swap the brackets. I took my setup apart at least a couple of times before it worked, but due to an oversight I missed a non-functional USB C 3.2 front panel. It wasn't a major setback, but I might have chosen a different board if I'd known about this. I suspect I have Asperger's (high-functioning autism), so I'm doing my best. The takeaway is everyone makes mistakes.
