I'm working on a friend's computer but have limited hands-on experience. When I power it on, nothing happens and the fans don't start. Running the GPU on another system didn't work either. It seems the power supply might be faulty, possibly causing the whole setup to fail. What are your thoughts? The specs are: PSU from Seasonic, M.Z77 Z77 Mpower motherboard, an unspecified GPU, and a Radeon 7950 graphics card.
The power supply unit isn't always the problem. A defective power switch or a poorly connected cable could cause the same issues. Has the computer suddenly stopped functioning? Was it placed in storage for some time? Did it have prior problems? What is its purpose? Does it hold any essential data that isn’t backed up? Appreciate your attention.
Exactly what was occurring with the other system using this GPU remains unclear. It might be struggling to fully initialize, or there could be another issue. As a troubleshooting measure, check if the monitor connects via your internal video output. Since you're uncertain about the specific CPU model, it's likely an Intel chip with an integrated GPU and a motherboard featuring HDMI connectivity. If it boots this way, the dedicated GPU may be nonfunctional. Also verify that all power connections are secure—ensure the wall outlet connection, 24-pin Molex to PSU, 8-pin CPU connector, and the power switch is properly attached.
In the functional PC, the GPU failed to activate and showed no output, while the remaining components operated normally. The broken PC showed no signs of spinning up. I verified the PSU cables already. I also tested the power button on the motherboard, which was functioning properly, but the system still didn’t boot and nothing appeared on the screen.
You receive a chocolate chip cookie to back up the data first. This is often overlooked. Because the GPU appears to be faulty, I believe there may be more problems with the computer. Have you tried reinstalling the memory modules? If your system has multiple, use just one. For booting, you only need the PSU, motherboard, CPU (with cooler) and RAM. Remove all other parts and check if the computer attempts to start. Good luck!
I began taking parts off slowly. I observed the computer producing an unusual crackling noise. I’m unsure if it’s the PSU or the motherboard. When I turned off and then powered it back on while still having power in the capacitors, the fans started moving slightly as I did it. What does this indicate?
At that age, it may be worth replacing the CMOS battery. Obviously double-checking all connectors are plugged in well. And there is a trick to turn on and test the PSU and measure voltages.
