Windows 11 might be added through the Windows Update during its full release, or you may need to use a USB installer. You should be able to preserve your data and settings like desktop background or apps. From what I understand, older Windows 10 programs can generally work on Windows 11, so it’s likely possible, though I’m not a developer so I can’t confirm for sure.

I'd be shocked if you can't perform an in-place upgrade using Windows Update. They've handled this since Windows 7, and they've already managed to transition from Win 10 to Win 11 with the beta. It seems the in-place upgrade should be smooth for most users, with only small issues. Likely, most applications will function properly.

It seems clear now. To boost adoption, they should simplify the process. A notification on the taskbar like 'Hey, you can now get Windows 11' reassures users and encourages upgrades, improving the experience for both individuals and organizations.

I don’t see MS because the Windows 11 upgrade isn’t available through the Windows Update. It seems to be rolling out in phases, so not everyone will get it on launch. When Windows 10 was first launched, I upgraded from version 7 to 10 using a Windows Update as part of the free upgrade package. I’m sure you’ve heard that it’s likely a free upgrade to 11 if you have the latest Windows 10 version (21H2 probably).

The update will be sent through Windows Update. It may show as an optional upgrade when a new Windows 10 release comes out, but it won’t install automatically unless you choose to. This could happen around 2025 if support stops for non-compatible devices (only on supported systems). Systems that don’t match the requirements won’t get the update. Windows Media Creation Tool and Windows Update Assistance will stay available to help with patches or a clean install of Windows 11. The process will preserve your data, similar to upgrading from Windows 10 to 8 or 11, while keeping personal information intact. Be sure to back up your files before proceeding. Unexpected issues may occur if you have outdated software—make sure all drivers are current (including audio, networking, storage controllers, chipset, printers, etc.). If you use third-party AV or security tools, verify they’re fully updated or disable them, as some can conflict with updates. Should a virus or malware be present, your security software might fix the infection but not restore damaged system files or registry entries, which could cause problems. Using a registry cleaner may lead to further complications.
