The CPU usage percentage decreases are leading to system stuttering, and after logging in, a black screen appears.
Hi all,
My problems started a day ago when my PC would chug heavily upon startup, almost like it was frozen. After restarting, it took some time before I could use it normally. Then again, after a few hours of use, the chugging returned. My CPU usage dropped from about 38% down to between 1-5%, while the HDD was writing at a steady 100%. I thought the issue might be with the HDD since it’s over ten years old, so I unplugged it, which seemed to help temporarily. But after roughly 30 minutes, the chugging resumed again. Eventually, my whole computer would lock up, forcing me to manually shut it down. Now I get a black screen when logging in to Windows. I can still boot into safe mode, and I ran sfc /scannow, which reported no integrity issues.
I’m unsure what’s going on, but I’m not sure if the CPU is okay. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Verify CPU temperature using CoreTemp or Hwinfo64; opt for CoreTemp for simplicity afterward, and use Hwinfo64 for other details. Execute Malwarebytes to confirm RAM usage is complete, possibly re-seating the RAM modules.
Sorry for the delayed response!
I've verified my temperatures and everything looks normal. I've also replaced my RAM and used the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, but the problem persists. The black screen after logging in with Windows has been resolved, though. I suspect a file corruption occurred during a forced shutdown when the computer froze, which might explain the ongoing issue. It appears the performance deteriorates more as the PC runs under load. Initially, the problem might appear briefly every 30 minutes or so, but it gradually worsens, with the CPU dropping to single-digit usage for several seconds each minute.
