Hello. I own an older system built around an AMD X4 870K (base speed 3.9 - turbo 4.1). I managed to upgrade it with an RX 570 graphics card for about $90, but since the CPU was already overpowered for its time, I attempted a slight overclock due to unstable performance issues. After reaching a 4.2 GHz overclock, benchmarks showed everything functioning well at 1.37V, but once the test began, the frequency dropped to 3.7 GHz and remained there during heavy use. Voltage adjustments didn’t yield consistent results because of my aging motherboard (A68HM-P33 v2). I’m planning a CPU upgrade next summer, so I’m hoping someone can assist with this unusual situation.
The benchmark results were disappointing. My E8500 dual-core processor barely surpasses mine in multi-threaded tasks and only slightly outperforms the 870K in single-threaded performance—scoring 280 versus 218.
I also ran stress tests such as CineBanch, AIDA64, and others. Regardless of gaming load, the CPU consistently capped at around 3.7 GHz.
The temperatures are fairly good considering the 95W power consumption of this older CPU... it stays between 45-50°C when idle and reaches up to 60-65°C during heavy use.
before 2020, my 870k couldn't even reach full load, only 90% at 3.9GHz. until then, I had to pay $6 to buy an AMD S3.0 cooler and replace the red aluminium block cooler. now, with the new one, my 870k runs at 4.4Ghz at 100% load, because the red aluminium block's brass column isn't smooth. the temperature of the 870k is only 70°C.
