I'm working on a fresh build with these parts: MSI B560I mini-ITX board, Intel i5 11400, Noctua NH-L9i cooler. The processor installation went smoothly. Over several days I struggled to secure the cooler onto the board. I managed to drive in three screws, but the fourth wouldn’t grip the radiator bracket. I could slightly angle it, but only a quarter turn. Each screw was turned about a quarter rotation—just enough to hold it but still allow room for optimal fit. The manual didn’t specify a required orientation, and most installation guides don’t highlight this. Most videos I watched didn’t demonstrate the process. This clip mentions the bracket isn’t square and can only fit in one orientation. I’ve tested all four possible setups, and each still causes the same issue. After examining closely, it seems two opposite corners of the bracket are misaligned. Or perhaps the screw holes on the board are too close together. If the upper right screw resists, I can remove the lower left one, then the upper right fits easily, but the lower left won’t go back. Rotating the radiator shifts the problematic corner with it. The misalignment happens at the same spot on the board but shifts depending on the radiator position. Here are three photos of my attempts to attach the radiator with the fan cable in the top-right corner. I know the fan can be adjusted, which helps track orientation if you don’t move it. You’ll notice the screw in the lower left isn’t lined up. A side view shows the same screw on the left; a top view without it reveals the hole is off by a few millimeters. If I rotate the fan so the cable faces bottom right, the misfit moves with it. Now the bottom-right screw is off. Side view and a top view displaying the holes. At this stage, here are four potential explanations: 1) The NH-L9i isn’t compatible with this board or processor without an adapter. Noctua lists both parts as working together. Maybe I misunderstood or the site is incorrect. 2) I’m overthinking. Perhaps I’m misaligning screws or not screwing them properly. Maybe forcing the screw in is better than adjusting. Or there are other simple mistakes. 3) The NH-L9i has a manufacturing flaw. The bracket corners might be spaced too far apart, more than intended. If I can eliminate the first two ideas, contacting Noctua for a replacement might be wise. What would I need to provide them to confirm a defect? 4) The MSI B560I itself may have a flaw. The screw holes could be misaligned. This seems less likely than (3), but I’m not sure if I’m reasoning correctly. Right now, I’m uncertain who to reach out to for a fix. I bought the board from Micro Center, which is far from home. I could try contacting MSI directly, though I’m not confident. Lastly, what would they need from me to prove the board is faulty? The goal here is to verify (1) or (2), fix the issue, or figure out who to contact for a replacement. Thank you!

Tolerances are consistently challenging. Begin each one slightly enough to fit in a cross pattern, then continue in a cross with a quarter turn until everything is aligned.

Starting from the problem corner and moving to the opposite corner reveals the same issue. The remaining two screws don’t affect the outcome. I should have noted that in the original question.

It seems the LGA 1200 coolers match directly with 115x models. I understand this might sound odd, but have you experimented by rotating it 90°? If it's ever slightly misaligned, it could be just a small rotation error.

The images I shared include my initial orientation and a 90° rotation. This might not have been fully obvious from my description; it's mentioned in a single line among the photos. I've tested all four possible rotations, but the problem persists as the screw moves with the fan rotation. I didn't attach pictures for all four angles since I thought it wouldn't add value.

There are no small, movable components attached to the mount.

You meant to ask about the adjustable components. The fan comes with easily removable mounts, allowing you to potentially install something else, though there’s nothing additional in the box. Thanks for your question!

Did you purchase this new Noctua cooler, or did it come pre-used? I'm wondering if the mounting bracket that attaches to the heatsink might be faulty.

I purchased it brand new from Micro Center. I’m also considering whether Noctua could simply provide a replacement bracket or if I might find a cheaper option elsewhere.

I'd contact Noctua at this point. This looks like a manufacturing defect. Have you checked if the mount has anything written on it?
