The computer stops working after short gaming sessions online.
My computer stops working after a short session playing online games. Most of the games I’ve tried are from Destiny 2, the first expansion, and I plan to test Warframe too. My PC is custom-built; I ordered all components and assembled it myself. Here’s the parts list:
- Motherboard: MSI Mag B650 Tomahawk WiFi
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7900X3D
- GPU: AMD RX 7900XTX
- RAM: GSKill Trident Z5 DDR5 7200
- PSU: ROG THOR 850 Platinum M.2
- Storage: Samsung 980PRO 2TB
I know this machine is quite high-end, yet it’s giving me problems with games. I’ve done everything possible—restarted the PC, used DDU, tried various titles, swapped PCIe slots, reinstalled drivers, deleted and reinstalled software. Still no improvement. My Wi-Fi is solid (Ethernet connection), and speed tests on net show normal results. Except for online games in general, everything else runs fine. I need help diagnosing this as soon as possible before my 30-day Amazon return period ends. I’ve been using this computer for about ten days and have been running continuous diagnostics.
make sure you got the correct chipset drivers for the 7900x3d.. don't look at the mainboard homepage, look at the CPU homepage.. as your cpu needs different drivers than regular cpu's.. (according to jaystwocents you need to reinstall windows to get the correct drivers working, if you got the wrong ones.) you ran memory tests? that's quite high speed, try running them lower like 6400mhz or 6000mhz.. or stock without xmp or what they call it now. since it's basicaly overclocking. buying highend computerparts is a lottery... usually they work together.. sometimes not. since it's a samsung 980pro 2tb.. run samsung magician and check if your nvme needs a fw update too. check if your cpu works with under volting. good luck.. this is btw why people use companies that build for them, as they have ran testing as well usually. And should know what parts goes together and what drivers to get. anyway.. sounds like a great system when you get it stabile.
Review the event logs to identify issues causing the crash. Perform a memory test by opening Command Prompt (Win+R), typing "MdSched," pressing Enter, and rebooting to run the test.
It's about the RAM, just try it at 5200 or higher. Stock should work too, but confirm the drivers are up to date. Just because J2C says something doesn’t mean it’s important—just because it worked for him doesn’t guarantee it’s needed. Get better RAM.
I'm just sharing this info. I don't have any experience with 7900X3D or any AMD hardware from the past two decades. He mentioned having the CPU and talked about it with AMD. AMD suggested a reinstall, so feel free to do whatever you prefer.
The reinstall issue stemmed from j2c having a 7950X3D in the system, which blocked half the cores due to how X3D CPUs function. After switching back to a non-X3D CPU, the same problem persisted with half the cores disabled, requiring another Windows install to restore the missing ones. That’s essentially what happened.
Thank you for your response. I’ll review all these useful suggestions as soon as I’m back from work. I’ll like and mark them, hoping the RAM was the problem rather than the GPU. I’ve become attached to it, and I understand prebuilt units are already tested and reliable. I’ve assembled a computer before, but not with the same level of advancement. Again, thank you for your helpful advice—I’ll get back to you.
The thread titles mention ONLINE games to highlight their digital nature. The system remains stable whether you play offline or in single-player mode.
I managed to play games for a longer duration now and observed crashes in single-player titles. All games seem affected, including Starfield, which crashes after about five minutes of play. I’ve followed all the advice given but suspect faulty RAM might be the issue. I set the RAM to its default 4800 MHz, yet the same problem persists. Have you already installed the required drivers for your RAM?
