Soo I'm writing this at 1 am soo my bad if some stuff I say is quite dumb. First off, the specs: - Motherboard: Aorus b550 elite - Cpu: Ryzen 9 5900x - Ram: Corsair 4x8gb 3600mhz (not sure if it's 3600, either tht or 3200?) - PSU: master cooler 850w gold (not sure exactly model, all I know is I've tested and it's working properly) - GPU: sapphire rx 6600 xt 8gb - Case: Sharkoon tg5 green - Cooler: kraken Nzxt 120mm (not sure exactly model again, but (I think) it's working properly too) Ok I think that's all. The problem: Was playing a game, Roblox tbh, nothing intensive just playing with friends, and the PC just shutdown. Tried clicking the boot button on the case, nothing spins, turn on and off PSU, nothing again. Go to diagnostic mode, open the pc, I don't see any damage tbf, decided to connect the 4-5 pin of the 16 pin to see if PSU powers on and powers the pc, it did spin to live for a brief moment before powering itself off again, most likely due to it fail safing itself? Ram seems to be working, PSU too, GPU did spin and show some lights, now it was not connected to any monitor soo I can't tell if there's any image output. The only things left are the cpu or the motherboard beeing bad, really hopping it ain't the cpu tbf, but how can I be sure? I've asked chat gpt and it said to try removing the CPU and see if it boots up, if it still shuts off, problem is motherboard, if it stays on, problem is cpu, is that true? Should I try it? If there's any info missing, please ask me. Also, I do not own any spare parts at all, it's all laptops in my house, first pc I've ever bought is this one, and it's second hand.
I wouldn't rely on chatgpt for assistance since the PC won't boot at all if you remove the CPU—it requires the CPU to start. Try reseating all components and attempt a boot. Also, consider removing the BIOS battery and installing a fresh one before reinstalling Windows. That’s what I’d do personally. I’m not very experienced, but I’ve watched many PC build tutorials and interned as an IT student.
I wouldn't connect it to Windows because it didn't even start at first—PSU didn't activate when I pressed the case power button, and all parts except the CPU remain untouched. I'll try the CMOS anyway.
It might seem odd, but checking the power supply for any burnt smells could help. It’s unusual that it powers off unexpectedly, especially since your motherboard won’t turn on. A fresh power supply might resolve the problem. It’s possible the issue lies with your motherboard itself. The safest approach is to replace the power supply. You could safely disconnect all components and connect the PSU directly to see if it spins. If you have a Molex fan header in your rig, jumpering the PSU onto it might indicate whether it’s working. If the fan starts and stays running, the PSU is likely fine. If not, it may be defective or have triggered a safety mechanism.
