I’ve owned my laptop since quarantine and it functioned properly at first. Over time, it began shutting down unexpectedly, even while browsing the web. At Best Buy Geek Squad they addressed the issue temporarily but the problem returned shortly after. My dad’s friend suggested a cooling or RAM problem, which I resolved and the issue lessened for a few months. Recently it started again—only turning off when launching games, with lights still on and monitors going dark. Audio would play briefly before a Windows update sound followed by silence. The PC remained on, but the screens needed powering off to display properly. They reported malware corruption, though my antivirus showed no issues. After getting it back, the problem worsened, and now it randomly powers off. It’s really frustrating to be unable to use my computer at all.

Sure sure. CPU is Intel Core i7-10700F at 2.90Ghz (maybe it’s okay sometimes it hits 4.00Ghz even when idle). RAM is 32GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz. GPU is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070. Motherboard is ASRock Z490 PHANTOM Gaming. Power supply isn’t exact, but I think it was around 850W.

It appears your display frequently shuts down when under stress, which could indicate an issue with the 3070 graphics card. Possible causes include insufficient power supply, faulty power delivery, or problems with the PSU itself, or even an internal fault in the card. If a Windows reinstall didn’t resolve the issue, consider testing the system without certain components—such as using a different GPU—and adjusting RAM configurations (e.g., 2 sticks vs. 1 stick). Also, try replacing the PSU, swapping out the card, and checking for processor compatibility before proceeding. This seems to point toward a GPU or power supply concern first.

I suspect the issue might relate to the GPU or PSU since the CPU worked fine after a thermal paste change. The red lights on the cable connectors sometimes indicate problems, and swapping cables can trigger shutdowns. It seems the power delivery might be insufficient, possibly due to worn cables. Since I don’t have extra components and lack confidence in handling PC repairs, replacing the cables could be a practical solution.

The GPU light shouldn't be red, indicating a power delivery problem. Usually, the issue stems from connectors not being fully inserted. If possible, borrow a GPU from someone and run your PC without the 3070. That should help first. Also, see if a nearby location can test the PSU. Consider using additional PCIe cables and replacing the old ones.

It might be the cables that are causing the issue.

It might actually suggest the GPU is the issue.
