As you said, your experience is with load. Yet you suggested OP to test the PSU without load (idle);
There is a big difference between idle and moderate load. Moderate load would = 50% of PSU's rated capacity. So, for 850W unit, moderate load would be 425W. While idle load would be 0W.
And what i said, is that it is pointless to test PSU without load (on idle).
PSUs fail when there's load put on them. But i have yet to see a PSU fail once it's turned on with no load on it. Unless PSU has input voltage switch, which has been flipped to take in incorrect amount of voltage. If so, this will happen:
