The computer is refusing to install Windows.
Hey there! I recently assembled a PC using some leftover components and a few new parts, aimed at someone starting out in PC gaming (details below). The problem started when trying to install Windows from a USB drive. The computer would boot past the BIOS and after roughly three seconds the video output would cease. I’m not sure if to point the finger at the GPU since it was fully functional two years ago before I retired it for an upgrade. The monitor remains on but displays a black screen with no video signal, even though it stays connected. It doesn’t shut down normally—it just appears as if the PC has stopped working entirely. I can still see the BIOS interface and the CPU/RAM are recognized within it. Every time I attempt a Windows install this issue recurses, regardless of how long I keep the system running. After taking the machine to a repair shop, they diagnosed it as having a "dead motherboard" and assured me all components were fine. I’m reaching out for a second opinion because a friend mentioned repair shops sometimes make errors during diagnosis. I live far from other service centers, so I can’t easily visit another shop. I’m leaning toward the possibility that the motherboard is the culprit, especially since it’s quite old. Anyone else experienced this kind of problem and has any advice on resolving it? I’ve tried various USB drives for the installation process. Here are my specs: Motherboard – GA ab350 gaming 3 (latest BIOS), CPU – R5 4500 (new), GPU – Gigabyte 1070ti wf OC NVME – Crucial P3 Plus 1TB (new), Power Supply – EVGA 500 BR 80 Bronze, RAM – Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB @ 3600MHZ.
It's conceivable your computer can't display the console setup like my GPU does. Similar to how Windows Installer works, launching it may run but you won't get clear instructions. Try booting Ubuntu to check if it functions properly.
Hey! I tried to start Ubuntu but it didn’t work either. The screen went dark quickly, and even with a Windows install already on the drive, it failed to boot. After swapping out my NVMe card for this new hard drive, the same problem occurred. I’m now pretty sure there’s a hardware issue.
