The College Build-Suggestions are here to help!
Hi everyone,
I hope this message finds you well. It's been quite some time since I began posting on the forum, and I apologize for the delay! Over the past five years, I've gained a great deal from this community, and I'd like to express my gratitude to all of you. In particular, I want to thank those who come to mindâespecially 4Ryan6, Moto, Rubix, Lutfij, Novuake, Russ, Nick, and everyone in the Casual Conversation Thread for their contributions.
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge with me!
I must especially acknowledge 4Ryan6, Moto, Lutfij, and Rubix for helping me with my watercooling tips.
Lately, I've been quite busy with high school and am now heading off to college. I'm set to study at the University of San Francisco over the next few years, which means I'll likely have even less time to engage on the forum.

Now let's talk about the build (which is coming soon).
I'm planning to downsize to a smaller system than what I currently own. Most of my existing components are being reused, but I'm swapping in newer or better alternatives. Right now, I don't see the current CPUs as a significant upgrade compared to Sandy Bridge. It seems there was an article suggesting only a 10-15% performance boost from the i7-2600K to the i7-6700K.
[strike]At first, I considered ITX systems, but any ITX board that supports my i7-2600K is capped at 16GB of RAM. That led me to opt for a MATX platform. This will let me reduce my setup size while supporting 32GB of RAM for video and photo work.
[/strike]
Currently, my setup includes:
i7-2600K
ASRock Z68 Extreme 4 Gen 3
Recently bought Gigabyte G1 GTX 970
Cooler Master HAF XB
Danger Den DD-M6T (RIP Danger Den)
XSPC EX240
XSPC Bay reservoir with Alphacool VP655
What I'm planning to acquire (maybe a bit of a sidegrade?)
ASRock Z68 Extreme 4 Gen 3 ---> [strike]ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z [/strike]
HAF XB ---> [strike]Corsair Carbide Air 240
32GB of high-speed RAM
Refreshed water cooling system
Update (4/26):
This weekend, while browsing Craigslist nearby, I found a Corsair 350D, i7-3960X, Rampage IV Gene, and an H110 for $300. Thinking it was a deal, I picked it up to discover it was actually an i7-3970X!
New build:
i7-3970X
ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z
32GB Patriot 1866 MHz DDR3 (got this weekend)
Corsair 350D
Antec Truepower 750
G1 GTX 970
H110 (Will be replaced with a custom loop later in the summer)
I can reuse my XSPC Dual bay reservoir + Alphacool VP655!
So far, on the H110 I've reached 4.7GHz with an offset of +0.010, all C states active, at 1.384V under full load, and temperatures around 70°C.
I'm planning to add another EX240 in the loop to lower temps.
[strike]Please let me know if my assumption is incorrectâI'm confident I can fit Alphacool VPP655 into this setup:
