I own a Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Pro Wifi motherboard with two M.2 slots. I recently bought one of these: https://www.newegg.com/samsung-970-evo-p...6820147743. It seems there might have been a slight damage to a copper trace on the top slot due to a dropped screwdriver, so I’m considering using the bottom slot instead. Since I’m unfamiliar with M.2 drives, I’m unsure if they’ll perform as well as PCI-E slots where the top slot is typically faster. The manual includes a diagram: https://i.imgur.com/Zws6ol8.png, which suggests using the bottom slot will disable two SATA ports—something that isn’t an issue for me.

The top PCI-E slot uses the connection without blocking SATA ports, while the bottom slot blocks them because it’s designed to handle the faster PCI-E device. The drive’s speed won’t be limited by the SATA side.

It seems unclear, but it appears your SATA ports won't be turned off. Just a slight slowdown occurred.

Trust the specifications, but stay wary of Gigabyte—those sheets are written by humans, and don’t rely on pink goo. Test the drive once it’s installed.

I’ve used screwdrivers on my board numerous times, the shielding they provide has been invaluable. I’d simply place it in the slot specified in the instructions first.
