I wanted a way to connect my Apple A1156 remote to my Hackintosh using an IR receiver. It functions on my Mac mini, which has one, but my own model lacks this feature. While searching online, I found others had achieved similar setups with older MacBook Pro components. Unfortunately, the parts are no longer in stock. I recall dismantling an iMac 5,2/A1195, though I don’t have its IR module anymore. My Mac mini shows "IR Receiver" under USB 2.0 Bus in System Profiler, but I’m unsure if it’s safe to remove it from its case.
Have you considered the pin configuration? The connector appears to be Black Gray Black Brown, with GND, VCC, and a power LED on the IR board. I’ve marked what I thought based on a multimeter test. You might want to check the Mini board for continuity on its USB ports to confirm functionality before using it. Just be careful not to damage it.
