I recently upgraded by purchasing the popular Corsair 4000D Airflow case and moved my existing build into it. The installation process went smoothly, with everything transferring correctly. After turning it on, everything functioned properly initially. However, one of my M.2 drives isn’t being recognized by the BIOS. Both of my M.2 drives work fine in the second slot, but the first slot on my board appears to be unresponsive. It had been operating normally for months with both slots functioning. I own a Samsung 960 EVO 500GB and a Crucial P5 Plus 2TB PCIe Gen4 3D NAND NVMe M.2 Gaming SSD, mounted on an MSI B550 Gaming Plus board. I’ve replaced the drives in each slot multiple times, but they still read correctly in the second slot. Neither drive is detected in the top slot. It seems the top M.2 slot has failed, though I’m considering RMAing the board before making further changes. I also added a few extra case fans, which is the only adjustment besides the case itself.
Identify the SATA connection your SSD uses. Some systems allow combining M.2 and SATA lanes, often removing SATA 5/6 ports.
Check the CPU and cooler before swapping cases. Re-seating the CPU might help sometimes, and adjusting the cooler could resolve pressure issues. Also, confirm only the correct standoffs are attached to your motherboard; incorrect placement may cause shorts.
I left the CPU and cooler in during the case swap. I tried a fresh install and reattached the cooler, but it didn’t work. I double-checked that all standoffs were positioned correctly and they were. It’s unclear what caused the issue, but thank you for your help!
I gained some extra knowledge about PCIe lanes, which was interesting, but after reinstalling my CPU and cooler I’m still unsure if that fixed the problem. I also checked for the newest BIOS and chipset drivers, though I might be missing something. At this point, I might have to return the board.
