It seems 8.1 works better for gaming but causes problems with certain drivers, so I stick with 7.

I experienced issues with version 8.1 but not with 8. However, I was running RAID 0 across three SSDs—two identical and one different.

Server 2012 FTW isn't kidding, unless budget comes into play—just install Windows 8.1 unless you really dislike Metro.
