On Ebuyer, the cheapest options are B550 boards at £135, £140, and X570 boards at £126, £146, and £150. You might choose B550 for its balance of cost and quality.

The only consideration is the absence of a requirement for active cooling on the chipset. Just one less annoying fan inside. That’s essentially all there is.

I believe it really doesn’t matter much (just like x570) for those targeting 3700x or lower/older models. For most people, the b450 is sufficient, and the b550 doesn’t change things in any way, just like x570 did. Anything superior is mainly for a sense of satisfaction among average gamers who have one HDD and an NVMe drive. Let’s be honest—if the Tomahawk max only got a bigger BIOS upgrade plus about $10 for VRM improvements, it would have been enough for most rigs over the next 4 to 5 years, even with 3900x, 3950x, and beyond. PCIe4 won’t bring anything surprising; it’s similar to how DDR5 doesn’t change much. We’ve already reached a point where small improvements are common. A 2700x 105W power supply could work on the b450 with moderate voltages, but a 65W 3700x needs five times more VRM power. Clearly, marketing that a major case isn’t needed—zero airflow and a kid editing photos with GIMP won’t solve anything unless you overclock a 3950x with LN2 on a $100 board. (P.S. I’m exaggerating for fun, but it does highlight a truth.) This leaves 3900x and above for those with more funds. If you’re spending over $400 on the CPU alone, the gap between a $120 quality b450 board and a $190 b550 board versus something like $230 for an x570 isn’t as significant as it seems with a $150 CPU. I see then, the choice becomes clearer—like upgrading to leather seats in a car, it’s nice but not essential. It’s only worth it if you weren’t already looking at it as a budget option.) Personally, I find the roughly $600 jump in high-end GPU prices over the years more annoying than the $50–75 increase we’re seeing now on mobos. That really affects new build costs more.
