I recently started using my computer about a year ago, but the motherboard (Asus Z490-E Strix) stopped keeping the BIOS settings after I turned it off. I swapped out the CMOS battery with several others, disconnected everything, and still couldn’t fix it. I’ve looked online but found little help. Is this a recognized issue or am I missing something?

The new CMOS battery might have a defective bios chip, causing it to fail in saving BIOS settings.

No matter the type of CMOS battery, you're wasting energy and it doesn't recharge. I understand it might seem strange, but they aren't designed that way. You're not saving any power—everything is balanced by manufacturing, demand, packaging, shipping (especially international), and re-shipment to reach you. Alternatively, you could let the low power output handle keeping your settings active. It might be a motherboard problem, but this isn't a wise choice. It unnecessarily drains the non-rechargeable cell and offers no real gain.

CMOS batteries have an impressive lifespan, lasting many years without needing a charge. They’re definitely not rechargeable, but their durability makes them reliable for long-term use.

Thank you for the replies, I understand cmos batteries might not be rechargeable but I have random power cuts it's all connected to a surge protector. So aslong as no power cut or I don't turn it off it retains fine. I'm mainly wondering if it is a faulty chip on the board if I could find a broken board and replace it as I've tried different batteries, mainly wanted to know if it is a common fault with this board before attempting this though. I was going to try slightly bending the pins in the cmos battery slot or a rubber to see if that works too just to eliminate anything.

I'm facing the same issue with a specific type of Adata RAM. I had to create a profile, but eventually, using new (used) RAM resolved the problem.

The BIOS chip isn't the problem. The issue lies with the CMOS chip, which holds the settings. This chip runs on the CMOS battery.

So far my approach is keeping everything plugged in while only switching off my peripherals (monitor, speakers, chargers). My Truenas server runs on a smart plug that powers up when electricity drops. I turn it off via the UI, then switch off the plug and only activate it when using Plex. This worked for both devices until recent power outages. I fixed the server by replacing the CMOS battery, but my PC still doesn’t respond. After installing the new battery two weeks ago, it was dead, even though I replaced it. Now I’m wondering if something is draining the CMOS battery—could this be a power supply problem?
