Looking for a replacement for the Lenovo IdeaPad 330 I purchased for $400 in 2018. It was a decent price for a 17-inch model, though the CPU is quite basic (AMD RADEON R2 at 1.8 GHz) and the hinges are beginning to fail. I’m mainly interested in a 17-inch display in a reliable device that lasts, without needing a high-performance desktop. I’d like to stay under $1,000 if possible. Mostly just browsing the web, checking emails, using MS Office, and occasionally editing photos with Adobe Photoshop. I came across a review of the Asus VivoBook M712 and thought it could be a solid option:

Do anyone have personal experience with this laptop? I’m also curious about Asus in general—I’ve had some of their motherboards over the years.

Are there other models I should consider? A different Lenovo might be an option, but their hinge problems seem unresolved.

Thanks.

I wouldn't suggest the Asus VivoBook M712 since it features an older AMD CPU, and there are more suitable laptops available for the same price.
You should be able to locate a reasonably good laptop for your needs within the $550 to $650 range.
Do you really need a 17-inch screen?
If not, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 provides superior performance in a compact design for under $500!
It comes with the newest AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, a 6-core processor, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. These features should comfortably manage your tasks and likely handle more demanding work easily. Additionally, it includes a solid 14-inch full HD IPS display, a backlit keyboard, and a variety of ports.
If you still require a 17-inch machine, the HP 17-inch laptop appears to be a solid choice for just over $600.
It runs on the latest 11th Gen Intel Core i5 4-core processor with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. While the Intel CPU isn't as strong as the AMD one in the Lenovo model, the difference is minimal for most users. The main advantage of AMD is its dual-core processor, which offers slightly better performance in multi-tasking scenarios.
If you're looking for a 17-inch device, this HP notebook seems to be the best fit in that price range.
Alternatively, for the same budget, you can consider the Asus VivoBook 15 M515, which boasts the latest AMD Ryzen 7 5700U with an 8-core processor. Although a more powerful CPU isn't strictly necessary, it would enhance the laptop's durability and overall experience. It also provides 8GB RAM and a spacious 512GB SSD, making it a strong value. The display is also quite good with a 15-inch full HD IPS panel, and it includes features like a fingerprint scanner and backlit keyboard.

Thanks for the advice. I’m focusing on the 17-inch display, which really helps narrow down my options.
I’m a bit worried about Lenovo because the hinge problem they’re facing is pretty typical.
I’ll look into the HP range next. It’s always a challenge to match performance with cost. I really want a reliable laptop lasting 5 to 7 years. I’ve had several IdeaPads, but the hinge issue makes me doubt I’ll last into 2022.
Also, do you think Ethernet ports on laptops are disappearing like floppy drives? I’d love that feature, but it seems to be becoming rare.

This Acer Aspire 5 17" model is available at approximately $950. It stands out from previous recommendations due to its higher price, yet offers impressive performance and a high-quality display. The device includes an Ethernet port and features a full HD (1920 by 1080) 17-inch IPS screen, outperforming many TN panels. Its specifications are robust, featuring an 11th Gen Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Additional notable features consist of a backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner, and the latest WiFi 6 technology.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into your suggestions. I hope Lenovo resolves their hinge problem, as they've had issues with it despite having multiple laptops.
