System: MB Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
16 GB (2x8GB) DDR3 / 2400 MHz AMD Radeon Gamer Series (configured to operate at the maximum supported speed by the MB, at 2133 MHz)
SSD Samsung 240GB + HDD Seagate 2TB
ASUS Radeon R9 390x Strix DC3OC 8GB GDDR5 - Gaming
CPU AMD FX 8350
PSU Zephyr 1000W
I recently bought this graphics card and installed the Radeon Software Crimson Edition v.15.11.1-Beta Driver from the AMD website. When attempting to play BF3 with graphics at Ultra settings, I managed to play for roughly 30 seconds before the system froze completely! The screen remained stuck in the game, and the PC didn’t respond to any key combinations I tried—such as Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+Tab, or Ctrl+X. Eventually, I had to press the Reset button to restart the machine.
Many people have complained about ATI Radeon drivers while using the same R9 390 cards.
I attempted a clean video driver installation after removing all AMD/ATI components from my PC, but the issues persisted.
Do you have any suggestions or solutions that could resolve this problem? Any of you had success?
Note: My system has functioned perfectly with my previous graphics card, the Gigabyte AMD Radeon 270x 4GB GDDR5.

Fixed it! The solution was swapping in the nVidia GTX 980Ti after several failed Radeon driver versions. It worked perfectly again—though with improved graphics this time. I understand this isn’t what you were seeking, but if your system has a 390x GPU that functions, it’s a good sign. I hope it performs well. However, based on what I’ve read, those cards tend to overheat, even when idle, especially during gaming. It’s tough to optimize them. Most of these had full tower cases with excellent airflow—similar to what I have.

My advice? I once got burned trying this. The 390x was so promising given the specs, but many others faced similar problems. I’d suggest avoiding this ATI product for now and sticking with newer Radeon GPUs until the next generation arrives. I strongly believe this architecture has flaws, and drivers can’t fix such issues. Wishing you better luck next time with ATI! For now, let’s keep going strong with nVidia.

Glad to hear all is well - and that's a nice big step up to the Ti - should love it

I do love it! It's so refreshing to have my system up and running again! Too bad the ASUS Radeon 390x Strix had issues... I'm a ATI/Radeon fan, but I have to admit nVidia does a better job lately.... and not only. Costly, but rewarding!

That's correct, I prefer both options but usually opt for the newest models from NVIDIA. I'm considering getting a 980Ti OC Strix or the latest 980TI Matrix for my Hero/6600K setup.

I purchased the EVGA GTX 980Ti FTW Gaming. I was targeting the Classified model for a larger radiator, but it would have been difficult to fit or install. I own a full tower Cooler Master Cosmos case, though it's a 3-year-old model—it’s spacious, but the frame would have obstructed installing the top-mount screws. So I opted for the more compact version. It still performs well and stays cool under load with stock clocks (65°C).

I don’t necessarily prefer ASUS, but for GPUs I think EVGA is a better option. I currently use an ASUS MB and my monitor is an ASUS VG248 at 144Hz. Both are working nicely.

Would you enjoy how they arrange their chips and present the GPUs with different pre-OC options?
