Everything costs too much. What if there were a pop-up every ten minutes and a long-lasting small banner ad? Rockstar could earn a lot if GTA6 came out in that way.

It’s odd when games are offered for free with ads instead of being paid for directly. People often accept this because it’s the norm, but it feels unfair to have endless interruptions. Why not offer value without forcing ads everywhere?

since even big AAA studios still have enough empathy to understand that promoting a high-budget game would require extreme effort just to be worthwhile. contrary to what people think, ad revenue is far less important than actually selling the product.

many titles continue to earn revenue via extra buys, such as GTA Online, which generated an astonishing amount of income. they could have simply offered the game for free without any issues. however, releasing it later is likely to anger those who spent money on it initially.

Low tier free mobile games/apps already do that. More in general, what ads? How is it delivered? What is the actual monetary value they get from doing this? Part of the problem with ads in general is they're not really worth much, so they tend to make up for it through quantity. Integrated ads, like product placement, could work much better, but it will cost the advertiser more and take resources to implement. This. At the end of the day, people go to games to be entertained and have fun. Sticking ads in it is a quick way to make it less fun. It is already a problem for AAA games to try double dipping. You already have to pay big money up front, then are presented by microtransactions and features that used to be standard are now paid extras. Also look at gacha games, although I feel they're on the way out since the market is getting very crowded, and regulations worldwide are closing the door somewhat. If you have the mental strength to not spend, higher end gacha games offer AAA experience without the cost. Thanks to the whales for funding this experience.

I’d rather avoid games shifting in that way. Many offerings that promise “paid tier without ads, free with ads” ultimately change to “paid tier but still have ads.”

it seems games such as gta 6 online might generate sufficient revenue to fund the free ad version, rather than supporting other titles. haha i notice bots popping in during sessions and leaving behind random ad content before vanishing completely.

However, it's likely someone in the community could create a mod to eliminate the ads, and there are also free versions of GTA6 circulating, making it too dangerous for the developers.

It seems GTA6 won't become unprofitable even if released for free. The return on investment might still be achieved over a longer period. I imagine it could function well with a paywall on the story mode while keeping the core game accessible online.
