Skyrim version slightly altered for GTA no, but I’d still pick the 290x. Same FPS, cheaper, and better OpenCL support.

It's a hardware limitation, so nothing has shifted. With a 970 you'll hit GPU power limits before reaching the 3.5GB mark, but heavily modified Skyrim could cause problems.

It didn't impact 95% of players, so it's okay. A heavily modified Skyrim might cause problems based on your screen resolution and the mods you use.

Despite the impressive 970 performance, many believed the 3.5GB 'RAMgate' would unexpectedly cause their card to slow down. Probably we overlooked basic logic. Unless you're running 4K games at full power (which the card isn't designed for), it should work well in most cases.
