I’ve been evaluating an upgrade and noticed both the 5500 and 5600 models are significantly more affordable. I’m curious about the differences and whether the 5500 is a better choice for you.

Secure the 5600 only if the price gap isn’t significantly lower than expected. The 5500 works if it’s cheaper. The 5500 refers to the slightly underclocked version of the 5600.

The prices are about $220 AUD for the 5500 and $310 AUD for the 5600, so I believe choosing the 5500 makes sense.

The 5600 is a clocked down version of the 5600X, which works fine compared to the i5-12400. The 5500 was made from discarded silicon and isn’t suitable for the 5600G, making it inferior even to the 12100. Don’t misunderstand! Check the GN review.

We need to know which CPU you're replacing since there are various choices available.

It's a low-clocked 5600G model, not the standard 5600. It lacks PCIe 4.0 support and has just 19MB of cache—roughly half the amount found in the 5600(X) at 35MB. Performance in games is noticeably slower than the 5600, often matching the speed of the 3600.

The 5600 costs $90 higher than the 5500, and switching to a 5600x for just $19 offers a better deal if you value performance over price. 5600x link: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/g94B...0000065box

1. Not much of a performance gap that would be a problem in games 2. A new 12 gen intel mobo is expensive in AU 3. You do have a point but the 5600 is only better because of cache and clock speeds and if you think the 5500 is not an option then the 5600x beats the 5600 and the 5600x is only $19 more. Better to spend $19 dollars for more fps if you are already spending $90 extra. https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/g94B...0000065box

I’m using an i3 10100F paired with a Galax GTX 1650, 16GB DDR4 RAM at 2666 MHz. The setup includes a 1TB WD Blue SSD, a 4TB WD Blue HDD, a 650W GPU cooler from a MWE bronze All-in-One case, and a Gigabyte H410M DS2V processor inside a Thermaltake Verse H18.
