yes you require a pump, a top, and a reservoir. some are available in sets. the distinctions between tops and reservoirs from various brands cover aspects like performance, durability, ease of use, adaptability, and visual design. i would choose the Singularity Computers model even though it's more expensive, mainly because it has a nice appearance, strong performance, superb convenience with many ports, and excellent mounting options. it's the only one i'm aware of that supports both direct attachment and separate tops with reservoir setups.
a custom loop can be integrated into any setup.
even though it isn't the most ideal or the easiest to use, 275R performs adequately for cooling a typical gaming rig. You might want to explore alternatives.

I'm attempting to push my GPU to 5ghz using a loop, but I'm just hoping to find a cooler GPU. My main concern is whether a large GPU would interfere with a vertical pump. I'm not sure if that's a practical issue.
there are alternatives if you're serious about it. just check out my build, which uses a smaller case.
There are two pumps:
1. D5
2. DDC
the branding isn't crucial since most of them are made by Lowara.
I choose the D5 because it's quieter. The DDC is more compact.
If I were to buy res in the future, I'd opt for the Singularity Computers top and res.
I’m unsure about the pump top. Would you need a pump, a reservoir, and a pump top? What role does the pump top play?
It could cost around $200. Is it still worthwhile given that the photon 170 is $40-50 lower and includes a d5 pump?
