Hello everyone, I haven't posted here in a looong while so here it goes. I have a Ryzen 1200 paired with an Asrock a320m pro4 motherboard + a 500w PSU which is 80+ bronze rated. The GPU in the system is the AMD RX 580. My dilemma is the CPU upgrade path... I am currently looking at the 2700x, I like the cooler I like the CPU and it looks like the perfect option but my concern is the motherboard and PSU. Asrock says its fine PSU calculators say its fine... But is it though? Anyone with actual experience on the matter Thanks and best regards.
Hold your breath for B550 motherboards—most should work, but a fan might be needed on the VRM. For gaming with the R5 3600, go with it if it supports BIOS updates. Check if the A chipset supports RAM overclocking, since that matters for Ryzen performance.
I considered the 3600 option but the cooler included with the 2700x is the wraith prism, which will also cool the VRM. I plan to keep the prism for a while, at least until I upgrade the motherboard for future overclocking. The +2 cores offer extra benefit down the line. Yes, my A320 supports RAM overclocking. I’m currently using two 8GB sticks on a 3200mhz CL16 with standard XMP. It also has PBO for Zen+ and Zen2 processors after updating the BIOS.
Both coolers manage to blow past the VRM, but the 6-core 7nm processor consumes less power than the 8-core 12nm chip. This makes the 6-core option more suitable for VRM safety and generally better gaming performance. I think the 3600 is the better choice. I planned to upgrade, but I noticed the 2700x costs the same as the 3600 and adds two more cores. I also don’t need an aftermarket cooler with it—my 1200 has the same one.
It seems the price drop will depend on which model gets the best deal during Black Friday or Cyber Monday. The gaming performance is nearly identical, and the overall price of the 2700X model feels a bit lower.
You can purchase a Gammax 400 for $15-20, possibly during Black Friday, or the Arctic Freezer Xtreme for $35 as a dual tower cooler.
