Is it owned by an institution or organization? What is its age? What are its key features? Usually, such devices begin functioning reliably and only degrade over time.
You might be able to repair it yourself since you're paying for it. From what I understand, the issue is likely with the battery.
It's a Dell Latitude 3300, I've been using it for about three years now. It began functioning properly about a week and a half ago, but then things started to decline quickly.
It's odd, but if it's only three years old, I wouldn't expect the school to charge you for a damaged battery.
