Hello Linus and friends ! To skip long back story scroll down till you see " MY QUESTION" in all caps I recently bought myself a pg28q monitor and I love it. 240hz at 1080p is much more enjoyable for me over 4k at 60 frames. I'm color blind so I guess I have more apprecation for low motion blur and more frames than a pretty picture. I run a 2014 Alienware R4 to power it. 4930k @ 4ghz (overclocked) 40 lane dell motherboard 16g ddr3 @ 1600mhz 850w evga psu 1070 evga ftw 2ghz (overclocked) 2 ssd's in raid 0 With that set up I was unable to run battlefront at 240fps. It was very very close but not quite there 180+ frames. So I decided to go big and I ordered 2 gtx 1080 ti founder editions they are waiting for me to install when I get back from my work trip . MY QUESTION :::: is a 4930k running at 4ghz ( can't push it any further) and running on 40 lanes going to give me a bottleneck symptom trying to push 240 frames on new AAA games (battlefront 2) running 2 gtx 1080 ti founders editions in SLI ?
Reject this idea. I’d pick a Ryzen 7 1700 for a 1080 TI SLI setup.
From my perspective, you're venturing into unfamiliar ground. Although the 4930K is usually adequate for gaming today, most users aren't targeting 144 FPS, let alone 240. It seems unlikely a CPU currently exists that can reliably maintain 240 FPS across every new title. Given your setup, I recommend giving it a try and observe. If you notice any performance caps in the game below your desired frame rate, think about upgrading then. This is likely a Gsync display, which means reaching its full refresh rate constantly isn't essential. The goal of Gsync is to ensure consistent visual quality even when frame rates don't match the monitor's refresh speed.
Thanks for your response! I apologize for the delayed reply. I've been using the cards for about a week now. During testing in all my games, I haven't managed to reach 240 FPS most of the time. My performance sits between 150 and 200. If I reduce graphics settings to boost FPS, I notice the frame rate remains steady while both the GPU clock and core load decrease. This suggests a bottleneck somewhere else.
