It seems you're focusing on obtaining PCIe lanes directly from the CPU, which is more relevant for GPUs. You might want to consider getting them straight from the chipset instead.

Do you know when USB4 eGPUs will start coming to market? Since USB is an open standard, it should cost only a small portion of the price for Thunderbolt 3/4.

USB4 corresponds to Thunderbolt 4. The branding around Thunderbolt is owned by Intel, so once the specification became publicly available, Intel rebranded it to align with an open standard.

I’m trying to replicate what Linus does. I don’t have it in another space, but my caldigit ts3+ dock is all connected. I plug the Thunderbolt cable into the motherboard with the GPU hooked up for passthrough. It doesn’t work—I see the dock showing up and some peripherals, but when I connect just the dock, no video comes through. Can anyone suggest how Linus achieved this? Thanks!

3) Even after activation, the PCIe lane may not link directly to the CPU, just the chipset.
So your concern about using an AMD laptop for eGPU is valid—especially if you’re not dealing with proprietary setups like certain ROG models.
