I just acquired this old computer and want to see how it handles new games at 3Ghz. I'm not very experienced with overclocking, as my current setup runs fine without it. What settings should I adjust for a stable 3ghz? The old machine has 3GB RAM at 800MHz if required.

I had a Q6600 and it introduced me to OC'd, increased the FSB to 333Mhz and adjusted the CPU voltage to 1.4v for 3Ghz. You might need to tweak the memory ratio to keep it within specs. With a good cooler and airflow in the case, it should work smoothly—just lower the voltage until it stabilizes or continue testing until you're satisfied. Prime95 is a solid option for stress testing. As always, an OC carries user risk!

oh thats cute..
thats similar to what i had 8 months ago.
q9300 p5q deluxe 4gb 800s
u can try but ur not gonna be able to run any new games the way it should be .
the games now require 3ghz.. but thats 3ghz of this generation and maybe 2 gens back. the chip u have is not comparable to what is out now.
dont think of 3ghz as 3ghz. thats the core speed but theres a lot more technology and efficiency... otherwise we would have chips at 20ghz by now if we just depend on the speed lets just say.
i got my q9300 to 3.2-3.4ghz with a lot of ram tweaking. if u plan to go this path.. toss out the odd ball ram stick i can almost guarantee its gonna forbid ur overclock

As i said just for testing, nothing serious. Will try to mess around with the ram settings.

just letting you know, I won't be getting much help with those chips. it might take me a few weeks to figure things out on my own. i'm just sharing a reference for you. the rig i have now is five times better in every way compared to my old one from 2008.

I discarded my notes but I recall a few details. You can likely bump your RAM up to 11xx until you start getting hot, provided you have the right model and CAS timing. Eventually, you'll need to adjust those sub timings if you want to increase your clock speed. Just keep going and do your research—it's part of the process.
