Forgive me if these seem basic questions. I got my 5900X but expect a delay before my 3090 arrives (the supplier said it’s available, so I ordered everything, though it wasn’t). In a few days I’ll have the motherboard, RAM, case, AIO, etc., but I won’t be able to assemble the system because I’ll be missing the GPU. I want to test my CPU and RAM—just make sure they’re functional, not just running tests. I have an old GTX970 GPU and wondered: can I just update the motherboard BIOS, install the CPU and RAM, add the GTX970, and see if it works? (Do I really expect it to work if it does?) Can I do this without putting the AIO inside the case (maybe on the board itself)? (I’d like to build the whole thing once the GPU is in). Can I skip adding the AIO cooling fan for the CPU, just to check if it works? (I prefer not to mount the AIO until I have the GPU to see how it fits.) Any tips before you start? Thanks a lot!
It's fine if the system runs briefly, but longer than a few seconds will require a CPU cooler. You don't have much of an issue with the 970 until the new card arrives. It's best to complete the build and install Windows, along with your software, then use the weaker card temporarily.

You don’t need to secure it but you’ll want a material that absorbs heat fast—like a flat aluminium or copper block. Older AM3 coolers can be attached directly to the CPU using the existing AM4 bracket.

You can place the heatsink directly onto the board using just thermal paste and the weight of the heatsink and fans to secure it. This setup will help maintain good contact without needing a specific bracket, especially since you're working with an Intel build. Just make sure the CPU and RAM are properly seated for optimal performance.
I entered the system and haven’t been active in weeks just to confirm you won’t turn on that 550$ CPU for even a short time without a cooler. I don’t even care about the price of the cooler, but please don’t let it run without one.
That's acceptable, though it's worth confirming stability. Even doing this now makes sense because the chances of a faulty CPU are very low, and your RAM should start up properly at 2133MHz with an X570 board.
