Temps Overclocking i5 4690k
Hi, I'm trying to figure out why my temperatures drop significantly between 11 PM and 2 AM at 950 MHz and 40% CPU idle. During that time, the fans spin slower (1100-1200 RPM) and idle more (45%), but the music stays the same. It seems like a configuration issue, but I'm not sure what to do since it happens every day.
This clearly shows a change in ambient temperature over time.
My CPU runs at 29-31°C at night when the room is around 19°C, and rises to 37-40°C during the day with an ambient temperature of 31°C. I’m in a hot climate. How do you?
By general principle, heat loss from the CPU increases when the temperature gap between the CPU (heat source) and the air (ambient) is larger.
(Heat moves from warmer to cooler areas, and the difference helps determine the temperature gradient)
Therefore, even with increased fan speeds, the idle temperature stays stable because the cooling solution isn’t effective enough.
Consider upgrading to a better CPU cooler—raising the fan speed won’t help much with Intel HSF at high ambient temperatures.
Hmm that is weird. I wouldnt worry about idle temps as they dont really mean much. As long as the load temperatures are in the safe zone then there is no need to worry. Some days my cpu idles at 40c and my gpus at 40c and some days my cpu goes down to 30c and my gpus drop to 25c. It depends on ambient temperature in the room as well
It shows a clear shift in ambient temperature over time.

Typically, heat loss improves when the gap between CPU temperature and ambient air increases.

So it makes sense that your idle temps stay stable even with increased fan speeds, while gaming stays comfortable.

Of course, this is mainly about noise concerns.
Your gaming performance looks excellent.
