I recently replaced my CPU with the 5800X and noticed elevated idle temperatures. I'm running Liquid Freezer 2 420 (push-pull) with an MX-4 paste and have undervolted it. My idle temps range from 44 to 50°C, sometimes reaching 60°C. I'm using AIDA64 for monitoring. Any suggestions?
26-27 ambient conditions are quite typical. Idle times also indicate minimal performance; push it to its limit and provide feedback. Keep track of core clock speeds and temperatures together—separate readings offer little insight. Robert Hallock – Technical Marketing Director at AMD
It varies based on your situation and airflow performance, but it doesn’t seem extremely out of the ordinary. Starting from a cold state, my 5900X runs between 38°C to 42°C with very limited air intake (4000X Corsair, roughly 34 sq in intake) and an ambient temperature around 20°C. Under heavy load, it usually reaches about 40°C to 44°C. Most motherboards feature sensors in various locations; focus on die temperature and CPU package temperature, especially the latter, as that’s more critical. Also note the typical GPU temperatures—my Asus KO RTX3060ti 8GB OC might generate more heat than the 5900X. You could add extra fans if your case supports it (I have six 120mm plus a Scythe Mugen 5). Do you have the front glass panel removed? I'm using the same case and am currently removing the glass because it provides a noticeable performance boost without it. I think this is due to the intake's 34 in 2 setting. OP, I agree those temperatures are typical. Even my 5600X runs in the mid to upper 40s when idle. The new Ryzen tends to get hot while idling.
I usually maintain my setup as planned. I've noticed temperatures reaching 87°C when running CB R23, but most often I stay around 70-72°C during heavy use. I'm thinking about moving to a Fractal Pop Air or Pop Air XL for an optical drive, though I'm not sure it's essential once other components are in place.
It's curious how the screenshot appears to indicate the test is active while the metrics differ. Regardless, achieving 81c under heavy load is quite normal if it completes as expected.
