I recently applied fresh thermal paste to my CPU since I observed it overheating. After checking, the temperature dropped, but the GPU climbed to about 80°C. Hardware setup includes Intel Core i5 8400, Radeon RX 580, MSI 360M Bazooka, and TEAMGROUP-UD4-2400 RAM.
Confirm the cooler is securely fastened. I noticed extra pressure on the mount with my RX 480. Regarding the paste, it was a bit more than usual for this card, and applying it before installation made a big difference.
I need to review point 2. The guide I listened to recommended placing a tiny dot the same size as one of the capacitors nearby, and that's exactly what I did.
Using my 480, I applied a similar method—spreading it out, checking the edges, adding the cooler. This resulted in a 7°C drop and a 75mhz stability improvement. The same worked for the CPU; I actually tested the GPU instead of the CPU and saw an even bigger gain.
The temperature increased immediately after applying the thermal paste, and performance improved compared to its previous state.
Which cooling compound did you use? Did you mention a specific item or manufacturer? Where did you purchase it from?
Placing thermal paste on your CPU might help if it's overheating and your GPU can now handle more heat, allowing it to run faster. However, this only makes sense if your CPU isn't throttling anymore. If your computer is completely idle with no activity, you likely have an issue.
