Hello, I’m checking my i7-8700k with a Z390 Phantom Gaming 4-IB board. I’ve been noticing the temperatures have been high for some time now. My friends with AMD CPUs mentioned they usually run between 50°C and 60°C during games. I’m currently at around 80°C for most titles, but about 90°C in Battlefield 1. I know CPUs can vary, but it still feels quite warm. My GPU is fine, so I think the issue isn’t the room temperature. I own a prebuilt cooler but haven’t found the exact model. I’ve changed the thermal paste and reinstalled it without much improvement, and I’ve kept the fans at full speed. Over the past few days I’ve seen mixed reports online—some say 75°C under load, others closer to my readings. My main concern is whether upgrading to a cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 would really help or if these temps are normal for my setup. I’d rather avoid spending $90 on something that might not make much difference, or waste money on a solution that doesn’t need changing.

8700K overheats due to Intel's poor thermal paste applied beneath the IHS plate. Such issues are common, as a large temperature drop often leads to delidding.

I’m not ready to start disassembling anything because I’m still learning about PC building and I don’t have the funds to replace parts if I make a mistake.

Checking your current temperatures isn't necessary—your setup is likely fine unless you notice significant overheating. A cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 can help if your temps are consistently high during intense use.

The NH-D15 is quite powerful unless you aim for a very high overclock. The NH-U12S should handle it just fine, and I even use a Hyper 212 from Cooler Master on my CPU, which is running smoothly.

if you hit 90 in games, spikes might appear you can't predict reaching 100C—it's fine as long as they aren't constant. If you're running stock (like 4.3), manually adjust the voltage to about 1.2v, and if temperatures remain poor, think about replacing the cooler.

Configure all core settings to 47 in BIOS and set vCote to manual at the 1.2 retest stage. Provide your update.

I understand it's been a few days, but I tried your advice and nothing happened. I ended up getting the Noctua NH-D15, and it performs really well in my setup. Previously I was getting 48c-52c idle, now it's only 25c. Also, my Battlefield 1 performance dropped from 90c to 50-55c. Really impressed with this cooler, just hoping it holds up.
