Hello, I recently changed to a newer motherboard compared to what I was using before. Previously, I had an MSI H61M-P23 (B3) (1155), but now I own an Asus H81M-R (1150) that my friend gave me for free. I sold my old CPU, motherboard, and cooler, using the proceeds to purchase a 4770. I thought I was done, but then I sold the cooler—a DeepCool Iceblade 100 with a 3-pin design, which limited speed adjustments. I considered getting a similar, more affordable heatpipe cooler with a 4-pin model (like the LC-Power Cosmo Cool LC-CC-95), but haven’t yet.
On the other hand, my Intel stock cooler is overheating no matter what temperature settings I apply. I even moved it to the chassis fan port instead of the CPU port to try slowing it down manually. I believe my CPU isn’t excessively hot, but the readings seem off. I cleaned the case, replaced thermal paste, ran Furmark’s CPU burner, and touched the radiator fins—temperatures were around 50°C or less. However, the specs show nearly 100°C on both the CPU and motherboard (assuming it's a chipset issue).
Since I placed it on the chassis fan port and set it to only spin up at max temps, it was quiet during idle. Now that I closed the case and put it in its usual spot, the fan is constantly running at maximum speed and still displays those high temps even when idle. I suspect it’s hotter than 100°C, but it’s not as bad as before. It might be due to the previous components still being there or a chipset issue. Any advice would be appreciated!
Confirm the cooler is securely connected to the CPU. Avoid cases where the cooler pins disconnected, leading to overheating issues.
If your CPU runs too hot, the problem likely comes from either insufficient heat transfer to the heatsink or an ineffective heat sink transferring warmth to the air. For Haswell CPUs, the temperature reading should be accurate. The issue might actually relate to the socket temperature instead of the chipset. If the heatsink stays cool, focus on the first cause. Reapply thermal paste and confirm the mounting is secure. Reducing fan speed will not help and could worsen the situation.
The current temperature reading is also quite alarming... are there any dark marks on the board? It might indicate a short circuit.
It might be possible, but fixing it isn't ideal since swapping parts isn't recommended. The best approach would be to simulate fan curves by estimating the required airflow (which isn't very appealing). However, with the two alerts, you'd likely need to disable at least 4 to 6 sensors. This seems unusual—have you looked into the CPU/MB values that might affect pin contact?
