Temperature issue at 7700x
Temperature issue at 7700x
I assembled a 7700x in a zalman z9 neo black case and paired it with a thermalright Frost tower 120. I also ran the 7700x in eco mode (via bios) on a gigabyte b650 x gaming ax. Using HWinfo, my idle temperatures hovered around 35°C on CCD1 and 45°C on TCTL. These values rarely matched. However, my gaming performance shows spikes in the low to mid 80s. They usually drop quickly, but sometimes linger in the 70s. The Frost tower becomes noisy after reaching over 65%, and it starts to sound audible. I attempted a quieter curve, but the maximum spike still reached the upper 80s. A slightly steeper curve caused spikes in the low 80s, while my averages stayed around the 60s. I previously played on a 4670k that ran about 60°C and idled at 32°C in the same case. This suggests the temperatures here are higher than expected for this setup in eco mode during gaming. I verified the cooler was properly seated and used mx4 thermal paste. I’m unsure if this is normal for this processor or if something is amiss. I had hoped the system would stay cooler than this, especially since in Cinebench23 multicore I never exceeded 68°C and single-core temps stayed under 60°C. The spikes are quite surprising.
80c is completely fine on a 7700x, that’s what I experience with my NH-D15 in specific games (not eco mode). The 7000 series behaves quite differently from other CPUs and is built to handle continuous 95c operation. Their spikes are also typical—nothing to be concerned about. I recorded a recent video where the creator discusses this topic as well; you can also check out their Jayz video, it’s detailed but will cover the reasons they run hot on purpose. https://www.hardwaretimes.com/amd-ryzen-...liability/
Thanks for the feedback. This clarifies what’s happening and why the spikes occur. I understand now that my cooler ramps up to stabilize it. I rarely reached 90, probably because of eco mode, but I often hit 5.5ghz on four cores—pretty impressive. I’ll focus on a fan profile that works for the expected spikes. Also, considering turning off eco mode, since I have plenty of headroom.
This update really changes how we understand CPU temperatures with these new 7000 series chips. My current setup uses a 30% fancurve (NH-D15 dual fans) until reaching 93°C, after which I switch to full speed. I’m aiming for optimal cooling so that even at 95°C with 100% fan speed, my CPU still hits 83°C at 30% fancurve—perfect silence is fine.
