Temperature is too high on i7 7700k
Hey guys, can you assist?
I’m using an i7 7700k on an MSI Z270 SLI Plus with a cooler master liquid LC240e. It’s running at 4.2-4.7 GHz and stays stable, but when I play games it hits 90-97°C. No noticeable lag or FPS drop.
Is this typical for a used CPU? Should I try boosting fan speeds further, or maybe check the thermal paste? Also, are these temperatures safe for next year’s use, or should I take action right now?
No, you got the idea wrong. The radiator should remain in place—just adjust its orientation so the tubes attach to the bottom of the radiator instead of the top. Even if the tubes are still too short, that's the right setup.
It seems the readings might be elevated, particularly for a water cooling setup—knowing that 7700K can get hot. What are the idle temperatures? If they’re similarly high, it might point to an issue with the cooler setup or the cooler itself.
How old is this device? Longevity isn't its main strength for AIOs/CLCs.
Its placement in the chassis could be improved—please share a photo of the interior, removing the side glass or acrylic panels to reduce reflections. [You can use imgur.com, postimages.org, or imgbb.com.]
Is there any overclocking happening?
In the end, those AIOs run out of water. It seems like something isn't seated properly.
The range 40-70 indicates a substantial span, suggesting the measurement was taken under normal operating conditions rather than idle. If idle temperatures were around 70°C, it could signal an issue. Reinstalling might not resolve the problem, but checking the old paste for even distribution or wear (especially if the cooler was installed previously) is important. If the application was correct and the paste appears intact, reinstalling likely won't help—though you can't confirm this before removing the cooler. This could point to a cooler-related concern.
I just changed the thermal paste and installed everything correctly. The temperature dropped to 40-58°C at idle on desktop, but it remains 79-93°C in games. I have enabled the OC option with XMP in the BIOS. Running at 4.5GHz on desktop now. CPU has been used for 2 years, cooler for 7 months. I think the water block has less water since this is my first liquid cooling experience. If anyone knows a program to increase fan speed, please let me know. Thanks for your help!
If I were the one, I wouldn't be able to fix these temperatures, so I'd just use a stock cooler and run it at stock. I'm not sure what's wrong since I'm not there, but if I had to guess, it might be an improper installation or a faulty unit.
