Hey there. I’m dealing with an old MSI 1070 Ti that runs perfectly except for occasional freezes—mostly during games but also occasionally while using normal apps. The pauses usually last between 3 to 15 seconds, and sometimes my USB devices disconnect too, though not always. I thought maybe the Z270 board was giving up, so I swapped it in with a 1060 3GB unit I found for testing. While frame rates have improved a lot, the freezes seem to disappear now. It’s been a fresh install too, so I suspect it’s not related to drivers or software. I also changed the GPU thermal paste without any results. Should I consider this a sign that the GPU is nearing its limit? Here are the specs for reference: MSI Z270 SLI PLUS, i7-6700K, 32GB HyperX Fury 2666, Samsung 980 SSD, 750W PSU, Super Flower air cooler. The case has solid cooling and a decent airflow. I know this old board won’t last forever, but I want to squeeze out more performance before needing a full upgrade or investing in new parts—especially given the current economic situation. I'm not sure if it will, but I don't have any BSOD problems.

Consider moving everything back into place gently. Is your SSD almost full? Have your Windows/Bios/drivers been updated? Are you using 2666 MHz RAM and have you run it through Memtest86? Check your GPU and CPU speeds during stuttering—would a fresh Windows installation help? Updated on Dec 25, 2023 by leclod

I rebuilt the entire system and performed a fresh installation on a new SSD, which appeared completely empty and brand new. I tested it with various SSDs before, but the issue continued with Windows and BIOS updates. The RAM was running at 2666 MHz, but I tried higher speeds today and only 2800 was stable. No changes were noticed except for the GPU fans spinning up and down repeatedly. GPU temperatures never spiked excessively even during stuttering.

I haven't tested my RAM with Memtest86 or Testmem5. My drivers are up to date.

The memory test was a while back, yet everything checked out perfectly. Drivers are all the newest versions available, which for the board is still fairly outdated—but that’s okay.

You receive only dump files after system crashes, which is why it was recommended.
