Hi, I'm curious if anyone here understands whether sharing your public IP address poses any risks. I set up several servers and people access them using my public IP, so I'm wondering if exposing it could be a problem. Is it safe to share it publicly, or does it carry some danger? Any guidance would be appreciated.

It's okay. In 2018 my friends ran a server and even the actual IP address isn't visible, no VPN used. However, this could expose you to DDoS risks. I'm not very familiar with anti-DDoS protection, so I hope others can assist you better.

Your public IP address acts as the visible identifier of your network. It’s commonly displayed on websites such as ip.me and is useful for tracking location and ISP information—often used for advertising or data collection. Private IP addresses, however, remain hidden from the public. Generally, risks are minimal unless someone is actively trying to exploit you; otherwise, you’re unlikely to face significant issues. For business servers, adding extra security measures would be a good idea.

An IP address serves as an identifier for a specific server or device within a network. The entire foundation of the Internet relies on these addresses being accessible publicly. There are dedicated systems in place to connect a domain name to its corresponding public IP, making it easier to access websites like google.com instead of dealing with complex numerical sequences. The main concern is that because IPs are open, malicious individuals could try to breach the network through a compromised client. This is why firewalls and other security measures are essential. It's important to manage risks by securing ports and similar components, which applies broadly across all systems.
