You're puzzled about the 8GB figure. It might be an OS-related setting, but tracking usage without Task Manager will be challenging.

I went straight for the 4th slot with the RAM since that’s what games nowadays need. Probably there’s a virus on it, so I can’t set up any antivirus software or run one on my machine.

It doesn't always provide a crash code for a BSOD. If you attempt to install or run one, it may cause further issues or system instability.

Screen freezes after clicking. Program doesn't start. Windows Defender is off, yet group access remains disabled.

Have you attempted right-clicking and running as administrator? Such actions often need elevated permissions, and the operating system may not provide them by default.

I attempted everything possible under optimal conditions to make it work, but nothing functions on Windows 8.1. I had to reinstall multiple times and kept encountering issues like "Windows not active" and a blue screen warning to activate.

The chipset isn't that old. I'd consider a hardware incompatibility if you said something like LGA1366 or x58 chipset because I've been told some people have Windows 10 working on them. If this issue just showed up one day and not immediately following installing the OS then you probably have something undesirable installed in the OS. Continuing to run the system could be dangerous if it is infected because the infectious software could include a key logger or other forms of spyware. If the system won't let you install anti-virus you should boot off a different drive and tell the anti-virus/anti-malware to scan the drive we believe to have something infectious on it. If it has something then we should get some sort of result.

I’ll just wait until I can obtain replacement components since I need to perform a complete reinstall of Windows 8.1. The hard drive I currently have is limited to 330 GB out of 1 TB, and I attempted a reformat but only showed 1 TB available.
