I observed an unexpectedly high RAM consumption recently. After reviewing Task Manager, it confirmed 16GB total but only 8GB was active. After swapping the RAM sticks, the issue persisted. The attached screenshots illustrate the changes. Could this be a hardware fault, a software glitch, or something else entirely?
It might be a problem anywhere from the CPU/Motherboard to the RAM. Checking the hardware reservation shows 8GB available, which could mean an iGPU is being used or the operating system isn't communicating properly with one of the drives. You've already tried swapping them, so try using the other two slots if possible. Also, run MemTest86 to see if it reports any issues. Currently, it seems like a faulty RAM stick might be the cause.
Check the remaining specifications. The APU/iGPU reserves 8 GB of RAM as VRAM. Using one 8 GB stick doesn’t reserve 4 GB; it uses the full amount.
I used the same components—Ryzen 5 2600x, GTX 1070, and MSI B450M—to build this system in late 2018. Everything functioned properly until recently. Since there haven’t been major hardware updates (except a small HDD upgrade a few months back), I’m unsure what might have triggered the issue. I’ll test it with just an 8GB RAM stick and let you know the outcome.
It looks like the memory speed in single channel is higher than expected. Are these two dimms paired? What frequency are they designed for? Have you activated the XMP profile or performed any timing/frequency overclocking recently? Could using spare dimms from a friend help confirm if the issue lies with the motherboard? Try testing the other stick to see if the problem persists. Do you have CPU-Z installed? If so, insert both sticks and capture a screenshot of the memory section in CPU-Z.
They're matching components (actually they came together in the same package and both have identical heat spreaders). They don't come from a popular manufacturer. They're advertised for 3000MHz, but I've only managed around 2933MHz with XMP settings—close enough. Since I haven't found any other people nearby with spare DDR4 modules, I can't test alternatives. I'll try these CPUs and run MemTest86 as suggested before. Looking forward to sharing the results! Thanks a lot!
It will operate at half speed on dual channel, yet still perform better in single channel—uncertain why. Have you disabled the XMP profile? Did you use the standard version in all slots? It might be a faulty board slot. Just guessing here; troubleshooting often requires lots of testing. It’s helpful if you have replacement components available. Where are you located? I’m in the UK and could provide a DDR4 stick for testing.
Thank you for the proposal, but unfortunately I’m based in the USA. I plan to check CPU Z and MemTestx86 first to see how they perform. Based on my experience, the off-brand RAM seems likely to be the problem. Given that my CPU was a brand-new Ryzen and the motherboard was a mid-range MSI model from before, I think both parts are reliable considering their reputable brands. The RAM itself is probably from an unknown source. Fingers crossed it’s fine!
