Most Ikea furniture is crafted from the same material as OP's present desk. Since OP has five dollars, a better idea would be to build an Amazon-style door desk using free file cabinets and an old door from the free section of Craigslist. If OP is fortunate, they might even discover a real desk there.
The one I suggested is strong pine. No unnecessary stuff.
On Craigslist, that sounds like a good plan. Back in the day, I got a desk (I wish I’d kept it) – a sturdy oak office chair.
The price was to move out of the previous owner’s place.
