Talk about my Diablo 4 run with an MSI RTX 3080 Ti!
I experimented with Diablo 4 Beta without realizing it would trigger the GPU failure similar to New World. The game performed well, with no stutters or excessive fan activity on the graphics card. My display remained stable throughout. I didn't use GPUs from Gigabyte or EVGA, which were the ones most commonly affected by such issues.
Before this, I adjusted my GPU settings last year—limiting its power consumption and applying undervolting via MSI afterburner. This was prompted by a spike in power draw (an extra 200-250W during Mech Warrior 5: Mercenaries), which triggered an APC UPS alert as it approached the power limit.
From what I understand, most new GPUs start at full power. My suspicion is that those that failed likely didn’t have power limits or undervolting enabled beforehand. As GPUs grow more power-hungry with performance gains, setting limits seems essential to protect them from problems like this. If you change your settings, you’ll also need to configure power caps and under-voltage profiles in MSI Afterburner, as these aren’t stored on the GPU itself but on your system.
Try not to attempt gaming on Linux with a high-end GPU—there are no Nvidia drivers there that manage power limits or under-voltage settings.
My configuration:
- Power limit set at 45% in MSI Afterburner.

Just sharing what worked for me, though results may vary. I still recommend exercising caution since the root cause isn’t fully clear. I didn’t impose an FPS cap in the Nvidia Control panel, as some suggested. It’s possible that without these safeguards, my card would have reached full power and suffered damage.
I’m not certain if a specific cutscene triggers the failure, but I’ve cleared all Act 1 bosses without any GPU issues. I haven’t observed anything unusual except for inconsistent FPS tracking. My confidence in the settings is high—I’d maintain them unless proven otherwise.
Beta is complete, so we can assume the issue isn't in the final version.
Someone proposed that a scene in a chapel might be the cause -

I've seen the cutscenes and had no issues at all
It could be luck or my settings helped. It wouldn't be just a Gigabyte issue since some users with EVGA GPUs also faced problems.
One person even had an MSI RTX 4090 bricked (see comments)

Also AMD GPUs appear to be affected

Just as before, it seems like there are cards that were already flawed and heading toward failure.
I also limit my power usage for the 3080Ti, though not nearly as much as I’d like. I believe I set it around 280W or something similar, but I should verify.
D2 Resurrected puts a significant strain on it, but the results are promising. I haven’t decided yet whether to try D4, but I might test it this weekend.
it won't be available this weekend, consider another link
