I own a 2010 g72-227wm laptop that’s struggling to keep up. I’m considering swapping in a Q9100 CPU, adding 16GB RAM, and replacing the storage with an SSD. This is my first time working with laptops, and I’m fairly new to computers overall.

Notebook CPUs cannot be replaced easily, except in rare situations. This is due to the fact that they are permanently attached to the motherboard, and swapping one requires purchasing a new board. If your laptop feels sluggish, overclocking it—raising its performance beyond its limits—might help temporarily. However, I believe it’s time to consider a replacement device or switch to a more efficient operating system like Linux.

It's likely the t4500 CPU can be taken out. I've noticed comparable units that allow for removal and swapping. I haven't disassembled it yet since it's my stepdad's and I'm still waiting, but other G72 models do have replaceable CPUs too.

Some T4500 units are often soldered, but G72 is a different story. You might be able to work with it, though there’s a chance it won’t boot due to compatibility issues. If you really want to try, you could go with T9900, 7250, or 7300—they all have the same TDP, so heat management should remain similar.
