The Witcher 3 began lagging suddenly. One day I played smoothly and the next it became very unstable, almost impossible to play. I didn’t alter anything in the game, didn’t install any mods, the update was applied, I tried removing the cache and reinstalling. Still nothing improved. With Skyrim, I think a mod might be the issue (I had about 100 installed), so I removed all of them without success. When I started with a clean copy and checked the cache, it didn’t fix anything either. For both titles, the performance remains consistent across different settings, even on low, medium, or high levels. I’m puzzled by this problem. What could be causing the stutter? My system specs are: CPU i5 6402P at 2.8 GHz, 8GB RAM, GPU AMD RX 470 4GB.

MSI afterburner is active while gaming. Monitor CPU, memory, and GPU stats closely. 100 mods is pushing performance limits—this could cause instability.

The issue keeps occurring constantly, every few seconds, even in the menu. The GPU seems fine, temperatures and usage are normal, just like in other games. Around 100 changes were made, mostly small ones such as weapons, accessories for crabs, quests, or minor spell adjustments—not major overhauls. Yes, I also had a few significant updates, but not many.

Always verify CPU and GPU usage even when running continuously. From my experience with Skyrim mods, they often affect each other, and some may clash. Running all at once is impressive only if everything functions smoothly.

I’ve examined the situation more closely, especially during the menu in TW3. The GPU usage jumped from 0 to 100% twice, and the memory clock increased from 1200MHz to 6600MHz roughly six times. I didn’t see any clear pattern yet, but I noticed a stutter every second for a short time. The temperature climbed steadily and settled around 42°C when I stopped the game, now at 34°C in idle mode.

I'm not sure if this will help, but the stutters in TW3 began after a friend came over to test his GPU. I replaced my GPU with his 1050Ti for two hours so he could play some games. I noticed the game was behaving oddly even on his card. When I put my own card back in, the stutters persisted. It's strange because that day I played TW3 on my card everything worked fine, right after installing his card.

Likely the problem stems from driver issues after switching between AMD and Nvidia. Remove all drivers (uninstall both, possibly use DDU) and reinstall them again. DDU link provided.

I realized it at the end. Several viruses were likely responsible for the repeated interruptions. Everything functions smoothly now.
