T-Mobile CGNAT setup for PureVPN remote play
T-Mobile CGNAT setup for PureVPN remote play
In short, I can’t use remote play outside my home due to T-Mobile’s CGNAT setup. I’m trying to get PureVPN port forwarding to work around this. My T-Mobile gateway (modem, WiFi off) connects to a Netgear Orbi router, which handles my Wi-Fi. I’ve got a static IP for my PS5, connected via LAN to the Orbi router. For PureVPN, I need instructions on whether to configure it on the T-Mobile gateway or the Orbi router. Also, can I set up port forwarding so only the PS5’s IP goes through the VPN? I just want that specific device to connect remotely occasionally without affecting the rest of my network.
Turning off WiFi doesn't prevent it from connecting to a modem. You need to disable the router components of the gateway. Use bridge mode or ip passthru mode. The problem is I suspect the gateway can't handle either because T Mobile employs CGNAT across their entire network. In short, there are three layers of NAT involved.
I understand you've turned off the WiFi antennas. It seems the device still shows NAT Type 2, which is confusing. Despite that, I'm working on setting up VPN port forwarding to enable remote play. If needed, I could switch to Xfinity since they offer similar pricing to T-Mobile but with faster speeds and unlimited data.
Be mindful Xfinity has some unreliable behavior too. It's the service I rely on. After the new customer discount ends, they may pressure you heavily. We're paying $96 monthly for 400/10 plans and our data limit is just 1.2 TB. They don't offer promotions to existing customers, so you might need to negotiate or cancel to get better offers.
They currently offer 400 plans with unlimited data for $55 a month over two years. You can contact them via Facebook to receive a new subscriber offer when yours nears expiration. If they refuse, simply cancel and sign up again as a new user under your wife’s or kids’ name. The main reason I stopped was they were adding an extra $50 for unlimited data, now it’s just $10.
The problem lies in the fact that I live with my family. They handle the Comcast bill while I manage the cellular one. We've reached out to negotiate a better deal, but they're uncooperative. They claim to be the only reliable provider in the area, yet they charge extra for unlimited plans. Another concern is that all their offers depend on using their gateway. We own our own modem and prefer to pay via bank account. They seem quick to process transactions but take a long time to reverse any charges—sometimes taking days instead of seconds. Additionally, there was an incident where they withdrew money from my sister's account without her knowledge, which is concerning.
