Approaching the 16GB boundary, I plan to test further and consider purchasing additional storage. Rebar is active with 10GB of VRAM allocated. The Super Res feature is disabled. This memory appears to be in standby for 40% of users; the error message reflects RDR2's behavior. Other applications seem to encounter the same issue near that limit, whether it's RAM or VRAM. If a VRAM problem exists, what diagnostics can help identify the cause?
Due to multiple applications and software needing availability, an app can quickly increase its allocated memory from 2GB to 4GB. The app itself may only consume 250MB, but it could demand up to 4GB if required. This acts as a reserve. When conflicts arise or apps request more than available, pagefiles takes control and decides which application gets RAM now and which remains in storage until its turn.
It might be due to faulty RAM or problems with Windows, since others have noted the VRAM-related error in RDR2. You can run memtest86 or the built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic to check your memory. If no issues appear in either tool during testing, the problem could be related to Windows itself or OS corruption. Consider performing a Windows Repair Install (in-place upgrade) to address the issue, or a complete fresh installation if feasible.
Tried to restart RDR2 while viewing a random clip. Capturing VRAM stats showed a high point at 4GB, then triggered an error about writing to read-only memory.
Restart after BSOD now lets me play the game while a video runs. The VRAM usage is higher now than before it crashed. RAM remains under 16GB and is functioning properly without slowdowns or crashes on any apps. We can also keep RDR2 from consuming much of the allocated VRAM. Note: Was working perfectly until I opened VSCode, Discord, and some Chrome tabs, pushing memory over 16GB. Then, when I spoke to a quest giver in the game, the whole computer crashed and restarted.
