Hello! Over the past while, my applications have been behaving oddly and sometimes shutting down unexpectedly. Recently, I realized the problem seems connected to memory usage. I’m uncertain about what’s happening or why I’m running low on RAM, since this only occurs when usage reaches around 50%, preventing me from using the rest. I ran the Windows memory diagnostic, which showed no problems. My setup includes a Gear NZXT N7 B550 Ryzen 5600x ASUS RTX 3080 with 10GB (REBAR Enabled) and 32GB (4x8GB) Trident Z NEO (XMP Enabled). Everything appears to light up correctly. I’ve also tried reseating the components. In one case, launching RDR2 on Steam while playing a YouTube video (along with several background tasks) causes the app to crash as we near 50% usage. What does “Stand by and Free” mean here? I encounter the same issue when running games like Diablo IV. If I close background apps such as Discord, more RAM becomes available and the problem disappears. So I suspect the issue lies with RAM rather than VRAM? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Check if the pagefile is active. It shouldn’t prevent games from running smoothly, since having it on usually helps with performance.
The page file was empty at 0%. I don’t recall shutting it down, but I can’t remember why. However, restarting it and running RDR produced the same outcome. The game stopped after using 16GB of memory.
Think about using Memtest86+ for a complete test of your RAM. https://www.memtest.org/ isn’t simple to set up—it needs a bootable drive and letting the tool run tests until finished. Review the manual before you begin. Memtest86+ can only confirm if there are problems with your RAM in this case. It doesn’t show the size of your video card or whether REBAR is active.
In my understanding, "standby" refers to resources already allocated by certain programs, not yet in use. "Free" means unused memory no longer occupied. It might be a problem when a program tries to reserve a large amount like 2681MB but fails, leading it to behave unpredictably. Pagefiles are essential. I don’t see any advantages to disabling them beyond avoiding storage usage for caching pages.
It seems the question isn't about system RAM but rather VRAM limitations in Diablo 4. The game struggles with low VRAM, especially without at least 8GB, and may rely on the 10GB buffer of an RTX 3080. Checking if RTX Super Resolution is active could help manage GPU usage during tasks like streaming.
System RAM refers to the memory slots you connect to the motherboard. The issue indicates a graphics-related problem involving the GPU's video memory.
