Hey there, I'm facing a puzzling problem and hope someone can help. My system has a 6800xt with a Dell S2719DGF monitor connected via DP cable, and a second Dell U2410 linked through HDMI. When playing games, the in-game FPS counter usually works fine, but sometimes I notice the game reports a lower frame rate than what the screen shows—like Apex Legends, Destiny 2, or Deep Rock Galactic. Most of the time it says 144fps, yet it feels off. After a while, when I switch to the monitor's FPS display, it suddenly drops to around 72fps and stays there until I shoot again to hit 144fps. Steam’s FPS counter also matches the game’s numbers. I’ve tried several fixes: updating drivers, cleaning DDU, reinstalling Windows, changing cables from DP to HDMI, disconnecting the second monitor completely, and even adjusting settings like v-sync or Freesync. I’m still unsure why the GPU and the monitor are showing different rates. Any tips or insights would be greatly appreciated. Here are some videos of what’s happening:

I've adjusted the monitor refresh rate to 144Hz. I also keep my games in fullscreen all the time.
What are your hardware details? If performance issues arise and your frame rates vary, it might be worth checking. The 6800XT should handle 1440p with Apex Legends and Destiny 2 without trouble.
72 equals precisely half of 144. Are you certain it isn't related to the monitor's refresh rate display? Use MSI Afterburner to check the framerates; a benchmark will capture max, average, min, 1% and 0.1% values. That helps determine if the issue lies with the monitor showing incorrect numbers. Have you considered swapping out the monitor cable? Also, @-rascal- is correct in requesting additional specifications.

I've swapped out the cable and the same problem persists. I recorded another clip using MSI Afterburner overlay which clearly shows the change. Notice around the 12-second point it drops from 72fps back to 144fps even though MSI Afterburner indicates it should be at about 144fps. This occurs during gameplay and the screen freezes at 72fps for several minutes before jumping again. I'm filming with my phone because the monitor's frame counter in the top left doesn't record properly during screen captures. I just shared here that I think I've fixed my problem. I bought a brand new DP cable and an HDMI cable for testing, but the original issue persisted after plugging in the new ones. The HDMI cable worked fine once I connected it, and I've been checking it for a few days without encountering the problem. It looks like the Display Port connection to my monitor is starting to fail or degrade. Switching to the HDMI 2.0 port completely resolved the issue.
